Men's Wedding Bands: The Complete Buying Guide (Titanium vs. Tungsten vs. Ceramic vs. Gold)
Share
Men's wedding bands have quietly become one of the most interesting categories in bridal jewelry. It's no longer a plain gold ring picked out in five minutes at the end of the engagement ring appointment — today it's titanium, tungsten carbide, black ceramic, and gold, in finishes and inlays that didn't exist a decade ago. Which also means there's a lot more to get wrong if you don't know what you're looking at.
This guide breaks down the four metals you'll actually encounter, the one thing almost nobody tells you before you buy an alternative metal band, and some of the more distinctive pieces we carry — including a few with genuine stories behind them.
The Four Main Metals, Compared
Titanium
Titanium is the lightest option by far — many men who've never worn a ring say they "forget it's there" within the first week. It's naturally gray, takes a brushed or polished finish beautifully, and is highly resistant to scratching and corrosion. It's also hypoallergenic, which matters if you've had skin reactions to other metals in the past.
Tungsten Carbide
Tungsten carbide is the hardest metal commonly used in wedding bands — roughly ten times harder than gold. It holds a polish almost indefinitely and is extremely scratch-resistant, which is a big part of its appeal for anyone who works with their hands. It's also heavier and denser than titanium, giving it a substantial, "you know it's there" feel that some people specifically want.
Black Ceramic
Ceramic bands deliver the deepest, truest black of any of these metals, and they're lightweight, hypoallergenic, and highly scratch-resistant. The trade-off: ceramic is harder but more brittle than titanium or tungsten, meaning it can chip under a sharp direct impact rather than just scratching. For most everyday wear, that's a non-issue.
Gold
Gold is the traditional choice for a reason — it's the only one of these four that can be resized using conventional jewelry techniques, it can be polished, engraved, and repaired indefinitely, and it pairs seamlessly with a gold engagement ring. It's also the only option here that can be cast with fine inlay work like turquoise, lava rock, or mother-of-pearl set directly into solid 14kt gold.
The One Thing Nobody Tells You Before You Buy an Alternative Metal Band
Here's the part that gets left out of most buying guides: titanium, tungsten carbide, and ceramic are too hard for a jeweler to cut, stretch, or resize the way a gold or platinum band can be. Once you order your size, that's it — if your finger size changes down the road from weight fluctuation, aging, or just being sized wrong the first time, a traditional alternative-metal band can't be adjusted. The usual fix is buying an entirely new ring.
That's a real risk most retailers don't mention until after you've already paid. We do things differently: our entire Thorsten collection of titanium, tungsten, and ceramic bands includes a free lifetime sizing exchange with purchase. If your size ever changes, we'll exchange your ring for the correct size, at no cost, for as long as you own it. It's the one benefit that actually solves the biggest downside of buying outside of gold — and it's included automatically, not sold as an upgrade.
Sizing It Right the First Time
Because of the point above, getting the size right at checkout matters more with alternative metals than with gold. A few tips: get sized later in the day, when fingers are at their largest. If you're between sizes, size up rather than down. And if you're buying as a surprise, a well-worn ring from another finger (measured, not guessed) is more reliable than an estimate.
Wedding Bands With a Story
Some of the most requested pieces in our men's collection aren't the plainest ones — they're the ones with something real inlaid into them.
MOANA — Smoked Rose Gold Tungsten with Hawaiian Koa Wood, Abalone & Guitar String
$399. Three materials, one ring: warm koa wood from Hawaii, iridescent abalone shell, and an actual guitar string inlaid into smoked rose gold tungsten. Genuinely one of the more unusual, conversation-starting bands we carry — built for someone whose story doesn't fit a plain band. Thorsten collection, free lifetime sizing exchange included.
Deer Antler Inlay — 14kt White Gold
$3,649. Genuine white deer antler inlaid into a polished 14kt white gold band — for the man who belongs outdoors. Because this one is solid gold, it can also be traditionally resized if needed.
Lava Rock Inlay — 14kt White Gold
$2,499. Real black and gray lava rock set into 14kt white gold — raw, textured, and completely unlike anything you'll find at a mall jeweler.
HONOLULU — Tungsten Carbide with Mother-of-Pearl Inlay
$460. Iridescent mother-of-pearl swirls set into durable tungsten carbide, with a diamond accent. Made for anyone who feels most at home near the water.
DEACON — Flat Tungsten with Laser-Engraved Celtic Crosses
$349. An intricate Celtic cross pattern laser-engraved into a flat tungsten band, for the man who wears his faith where he can see it. Thorsten collection, free lifetime sizing exchange included.
FOX — Black Ceramic with Real Military-Style Desert Camo

- Is there a military, first responder, or other discount available?
